Philosophy of Science

PHILOSOPHY OF SCIENCE · BLOCKS 01–15

Block 1 · Looking and checking

01

A white wall can look yellow under yellow light.

02

Yet looking yellow under that light does not by itself mean that the wall is yellow.

03

How something looks can differ from how it actually is.

04

We can therefore ask two different questions: “How does the wall look to me?” and “What color is the wall?”

05

Answering the first question does not always settle the second.

06

We could look at the same wall under a different light and compare how it looks.

07

That comparison gives us more to consider, but it does not guarantee that we will get the color right.

08

We have begun to check what we think, rather than simply accept how something first looks.

Block 2 · Reconsidering an answer

09

Suppose we turn off the yellow lamp, and the same wall looks white in daylight.

10

No one has repainted the wall between the two looks.

11

The difference gives us a reason to question our first answer: the light may have made the wall look yellow.

12

Here, a reason is something we can point to when explaining why we should accept or question an answer.

13

If our first answer was “The wall is yellow,” we might now say, “That first look is not enough for me to be sure.”

14

We do not have to replace that answer immediately with “The wall is white.”

15

We can leave the question open—“I am not yet sure”—while we continue checking.

Block 3 · Considering and believing

16

We can think about the answer “The wall is white” without yet accepting it.

17

If we take that answer to describe how the wall actually is, we have a belief: we believe that the wall is white.

18

We can have a belief before checking it.

19

But believing that the wall is white does not, by itself, make the wall white.

20

So “What do I believe?” and “Is it actually so?” are different questions.

21

Checking can help us reconsider a belief: we may keep it, change it, or leave the question open.

Block 4 · True and false

22

In our wall example, a belief is true when the wall is as we believe it to be, and false when it is not.

23

For example, the belief “The wall is white” is true if the wall is white, and false if the wall is not white.

24

That belief can be true even if we have not checked the wall.

25

And a belief can still be false after we have checked: as we saw earlier, checking does not guarantee that we get the color right.

26

So “Is this belief true?” and “What reasons do we have for believing it?” are different questions.

Block 5 · Evidence and further checking

27

Our first look at the wall gave us a reason to believe that it was yellow.

28

We call something evidence for a belief when it gives us a reason to think that the belief is true.

29

But further evidence can lead us to reconsider: the wall looking different under another light gave us a reason to question what our first look told us.

30

This still leaves open whether the wall is yellow; our first look may not be enough to settle its color.

31

So having evidence for a belief does not always settle the question: we also need to consider what else we have found.

Block 6 · Planning a test

32

To seek more evidence, we can plan a check around a particular question.

33

For the wall, we can ask whether turning on the yellow lamp makes it look yellow.

34

If the lamp is making that difference, we would expect the yellow appearance to return when we turn it on again under the same conditions.

35

We can stay in the same place and switch the lamp off and on while keeping the other lighting the same.

36

If the yellow appearance returns, that gives us further evidence that the lamp is making the difference.

37

If it does not return, we have a reason to reconsider that answer and check whether we kept the other conditions the same.

38

This is a test: we arrange a check to help us decide whether to accept or reconsider an answer.

Block 7 · Hypothesis and prediction

39

In this test, “The lamp makes the wall look yellow” is the answer we are considering.

40

Here, we call that proposed answer a hypothesis: an answer we can examine rather than simply take to be true.

41

We can test a hypothesis while still leaving open whether we believe it.

42

If our lamp hypothesis is right, we expect the wall to look yellow again when we switch the lamp back on, provided the other conditions stay the same.

43

That expected result is a prediction: it says what we expect to find if the hypothesis is right under those conditions.

44

We then compare the prediction with what we actually find, using the result to reconsider the hypothesis.

Block 8 · Keeping a condition the same

45

What a test result tells us depends partly on how we arranged the test.

46

Suppose the daylight also becomes dimmer while we switch on the yellow lamp.

47

If the wall now looks more yellow, this comparison alone does not tell us whether the lamp, the change in daylight, or both made the difference.

48

Keeping the daylight the same helps us avoid mixing up these two changes when we test the lamp hypothesis.

49

This is one way of controlling a condition in a test: we keep it the same while changing something else.

50

It does not remove every possible source of error, but it makes this particular comparison easier to use as evidence.

Block 9 · Repeating and recording

51

After arranging the comparison carefully, we can repeat it to see whether the wall looks different each time we switch the lamp on and off.

52

For each attempt, we can write down what we changed, what we kept the same, and how the wall looked.

53

These records let us compare the results of different attempts alongside the conditions in which we obtained them.

54

A result that differs from our prediction belongs in the record too; leaving it out would hide something we need to consider.

55

If the results differ between attempts, we can check whether the lighting or our position changed before deciding what this means for the hypothesis.

56

Even matching results do not guarantee that our answer is right: the same mistake can be repeated along with the test.

Block 10 · Letting others check

57

Because we may repeat a mistake without noticing it, we can ask another person to examine how we carried out the test.

58

We can show them our records of the lighting, our position, and what we saw, including results that did not match our prediction.

59

These details can help them notice something we overlooked or try the comparison themselves.

60

If their result differs from ours, we can compare what each of us did before deciding what the difference tells us.

61

Sharing how we reached an answer therefore gives others a way to check it, beyond simply hearing which answer we accept.

Block 11 · From checking to science

62

People can organize this work together: asking questions, proposing answers, gathering evidence, and checking one another’s work.

63

As a starting point, we can think of science as organized efforts to understand how the world works by developing answers and examining them against evidence.

64

Its questions range from how light travels to how plants grow and how people learn.

65

The ways people investigate such questions are their methods; our planned comparison is one example of a method.

66

Different questions can require different methods, so our lamp test is not a set of steps that every scientific investigation must follow.

67

We can ask both what answer an investigation gives us and why its method gives us a reason to accept that answer.

Block 12 · A question about science

68

In the lamp test, one question is whether switching on the lamp makes the wall look yellow.

69

A different question is why getting the predicted result gives us a reason to believe the hypothesis, and whether that reason is enough to settle that it is true.

70

This second question can arise in many investigations, even when they concern different things and predict different results.

71

Asking what scientific methods give us reasons to believe, and whether those reasons are enough, is part of philosophy of science.

Block 13 · One result, two hypotheses

72

To see why a result may not settle an answer, consider a wet garden path.

73

One hypothesis is that rain made it wet; another is that someone sprayed it with a hose.

74

Either could leave the path wet, so the wetness fits both hypotheses.

75

Seeing that the path is wet therefore does not, by itself, tell us which of those things happened.

76

A result can fit a hypothesis without settling that it is true, because another hypothesis may fit that result too.

Block 14 · Telling hypotheses apart

77

To tell the rain and hose hypotheses apart, we can look for something we would expect to find under one but not the other.

78

For example, we can check a nearby part of the same path that is also open to the sky.

79

Recent rain over the garden would normally wet both parts, while a hose aimed only at the first part could leave the other dry.

80

If the nearby part is dry, that gives us a reason to favor the hose hypothesis over the rain hypothesis.

81

But we should also check whether that part could have dried faster, since this would change what its dryness tells us.

82

Further evidence can therefore help us choose between hypotheses, while still leaving reasons to continue checking.

Block 15 · What a prediction depends on

83

Why did we need to check whether the nearby part of the path had dried faster?

84

To expect that part to still be wet after rain, we also need to think that it has not yet dried.

85

Here, that further belief is a background assumption: something we take to be the case when making the prediction, but which may itself need checking.

If we find that part dry, there may have been no rain, or it may have rained and then dried there.

So a result that differs from our prediction does not, by itself, tell us whether the rain hypothesis or our belief about drying is mistaken.

When a prediction fails, we therefore need to examine both the hypothesis we were testing and the background assumptions used to make the prediction.
